Community Forum on Planning Changes 7.30pm Tuesday 23rd October 2012 Redfern Town Hall. This forum has been called by a range of community associations in response to the proposed changes to planning controls by NSW State Parliament.   This will replace planning legislation that has long underpinned the State’s planning controls. If approved, these changes will ‘fast track economic development’ across the inner city and are likely to result in overdevelopment in our neighbourhoods.  The proposed changes will: remove your right to comment on a Development Application (DA) in your street; are pro-developer; do not mention the preservation of heritage suburbs nor environment sustainability principles; introduce “enterprise zones” into the area, which are a “free for all” for developers; rely on “Private Certifiers” paid by developers to approve DAs (rather than Council); “Consultation” is limited to an upfront “regional strategic planning phase” (and not specified). To view/download the proposed changes, go to:  www.planning.nsw.gov.au/a-new-planning-system-for-nsw

Kings Cross Community Alcohol Forum 6.30pm Thursday 30th August 2012 – Holiday Inn, Victoria Street, Potts Point (opposite rail station). Speakers include Michael Thorn, Director of FARE (Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education); Dr Alex Wodak from St Vincent’s Hospital; Anthony Shakeshaft, Deputy Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Centre UNSW; Tony Brown on Newcastle’s success in reducing violence by almost 40% by changing closing times and local residents.

What a great day. It was fun getting together with friends and eating way too much food.
