Residents rally against cuts to 311 bus service

Elizabeth Bay residents will rally in Martin Place (cnr Elizabeth St) at 7:30am this Tuesday morning (7 April 2009) to protest cuts to the 311 bus service scheduled to come into effect from 26 April 2009.

The rally, organised by the 2011 Residents Association Inc, is protesting cuts which would:
– disconnect the route from Circular Quay (making it terminate at Gresham St in the City),
– and withdraw public transport from many disabled and elderly residents by cutting Ithaca Rd, Billyard Ave and Onslow Ave in Elizabeth Bay out of the route.

“It makes no sense to disconnect the route from Circular Quay,” said Dr Sacha Blumen, President of the 2011 Residents Association Inc. “This is a no-brainer – the 311 bus could still stop at Circular Quay and terminate at Gresham St.”

“The State Government claims these cuts will improve the access of disabled people to the bus service as larger buses allowing greater disability access will be used on the route. But this ignores the disabled and elderly who will be affected by the cuts.”

Dr Blumen said that many elderly residents had lived in the area for years and relied on public transport. “I have heard that one resident Is reluctantly thinking of selling his apartment.”

The cuts will also affect many local residents who use the service to access the northern CBD, Circular Quay and the Opera House. It will also disadvantage Elizabeth Bay House, one of our most important historical displays, by removing it from the bus route.

“Hundreds of people signed petitions against the cuts in the last few days, and more than 100 people attended a local residents meeting in late March,” said Dr Blumen. “In addition, local Councillors support the campaign.”

Residents are inviting the Minister for Transport, David Campbell, the Opposition spokesperson for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian MP, local MP Clover Moore, and all City of Sydney Councillors to attend.
